Smoke Free Ontario Act Changes Impacting Sporting Areas

As of January 1, 2015, smoking is prohibited at publicly-owned outdoor sporting areas, spectator areas, spSFO_Logo2orting areas and public areas within 20 meters of any point of the edge of the sport or spectator areas. Sporting areas includes but is not limited to those used for: soccer, football, baskeNo-Smoking-logotball, tennis, baseball, softball, cricket, skating, beach volleyball, swimming and skateboarding. Coaches and sports organizations are important role models for youth, and what you do and say about tobacco, impacts on how youth think about tobacco and its use. The SMAA Girls Fastball organization is committed to providing a healthy environment for participants, volunteers and spectators involved with our organization. We recognize that there is significant evidence demonstrating the negative health impacts of tobacco use and exposure (including second-hand smoke from the use of tobacco indoors and exposure to drifting smoke outdoors) and that no level of tobacco exposure is safe. We also recognize that children and youth gain positive images of tobacco use when they see role-models, leaders and individuals that they respect using tobacco.

We believe that Fastball is a sport that promotes physical activity and healthy living. Players, coaches and volunteers involved in the SMAA Girls Fastball organization have a responsibility to model positive health behaviour with regard to tobacco use.

Activities including but not limited to games, tournaments, competitions, practices, training sessions, events (e.g., fundraising) and other performances sanctioned by our organization will be tobacco-free. Definition: Tobacco-free means that the use of tobacco by players/ participants, coaches/leaders, parents/caregivers, spectators and officials is prohibited during all activities sanctioned or engaged in by our organization. Tobacco products include: cigarettes, cigars, pipes, cigarillos, tobacco chew, plug, or snuff, snus, hookah, bidis and kreteks.

The SMAA Girls Fastball tobacco-free policy will apply to all activities including, but not limited to games, tournaments, competitions, practices, training sessions, events (e.g., fundraising) and other performances sanctioned by our organization. Locations for each of these activities will vary, however our policy will apply to all locations while the SMAA Girls Fastball sanctioned activity is ongoing.

Smokers must be at least 20 meters (65 feet) away from the last person at the diamond. Example: a parent is sitting 10 feet away from the dug out….. that smoker must stand at least 20 meters behind that parent. Its not from the diamond, but the closest person. So pretty much Diamonds 2 & 3 are smoke free zones when soccer is on.  The distance from 1st to 2nd base is 55 feet, so add another 10 feet to that and that is your distance away.

Thank-you for your co-operation in this matter.   SMAA Girls Fastball
